Anti-retroviral (ARVs) studies have been added as a part of curriculum for teaching various degrees at the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, MUCHS).

The Head of Pharmacy Department,Dr Olipa Ngassapa, made the disclosure at the end of a four-day seminar for lecturers and heads of various departments of the varsity in Dar es Salaam.

She said the decision to include ARVs studies as a core subject would improve the knowledge on proper usage of ARVs.

Dr Ngassapa said preparations of the curriculum will start soon and the same will go into use as soon as possible.

She said the university has decided to incorporate studies on ARVs in the overall curriculum of the university to avoid possible misuse of the drugs by under qualified doctors.

’’The drugs are very different from others ...need to have doctors who are well qualified on how to prescribe them,’’ she said.

Dean of the university Professor Kisali Pallangyo, said during the seminar that it is important for medical doctors to know that the drugs are not useful to all patients.

He said AIDS victims who qualify to use ARVs are only those whose CD4 count is down to 200.
’’A patient is supposed to use a tablet daily,’’ he said.
