The national soccer team, Taifa Stars, plays Burkina Faso in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nation qualifier, Group Seven match at the National Stadium today.

Our players under the newly-assigned Brazilian coach, Marcio Maximo, are in upbeat mood to defeat the West African side.

The nation has done its best level to make sure that the team trains in a favourable condition by contributing the necessary support and logistics.

What remains is for Tanzanians to turn up in big numbers to cheer our representatives.

Zealous cheering our players will give them immense encouragement as they will have the positive feeling that all Tanzanians are with them.

In the past years, fans used to cheer foreign teams especially when Taifa Stars played poorly.

We do not expect this to happen again. We call upon football fans to cheer the team even if it loses to the visitors.

We know that our team is capable of winning the match but we should also not expect too much from our newly-recruited coach, Marcio Maximo, because he has been with the team for only 20 days.

The Brazilian coach is still in the process of scouting for the best players, hence any negative outcome of today’s match should not, therefore, be a ticket of wrath against him.

We should also thank President Jakaya Kikwete for visiting the team’s training camp, a gesture showing that Taifa Stars belongs to all Tanzanians.

His visit has motivated the players, the coach, soccer lovers and even the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF).

The tour has created public awareness of the team and has as well made many people who harboured doubts on the team to be pessimistic.

One thing we have to keep in mind is President Kikwete’s positive gesture towards our national football team.
We, therefore, appeal to other people to continue contributing to the team.

This will help inm the team’s preparations for the remaining matches in the Group Seven – one return match against Burkina Faso and four matches against Mozambique and Senegal.
