Mwambao Primary School, an old ”German School’’ in Bagamoyo, has received 27,218 Euros equivalents to 44,746,000/- support for rehabilitation from the German Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

A press statement issued by the embassy yesterday said the contribution has been made available through ”Marienschule Ahlen,’’ the German partner school of Mwambao School.

”The Marienshule has in collaboration with the ’Freundeskreis Bagamoyo e.V.’ (Bagamoyo Friendship Society, a German NGO) and many volunteers already started to rehabilitate the school,” says the statement.

The rehabilitation was being done in co-ordination with the Department of Antiquities in Dar es Salaam and the District Council of Bagamoyo, says the statement.

Kind contributions of the parents of the children attending Mwambao School will also co-finance the rehabilitation, says the statement.

”The Mwambao School in Bagamoyo – former capital of German East Africa – is a historic building, which still serves as a primary school for about 800 students.”

The building had fallen into disrepair over the past decades, thus increasingly becoming dangerous for habitation.

The rehabilitation will make it safe and usable as primary school, says the statement.

The inauguration of Mwambao School after rehabilitation is scheduled for 6th October, 2006 .
