Firearms surrendered

By Peter Cassonga, PST, Kigoma

Over 3500 firearms possessed illegally have been handed over to authorities in Kigoma and Kagera regions by their owners between July 2005 and July 2006, this year.

UNDP National Co-ordinator for North Western Tanzania, Ludovicka Tarimo, said in a statement after a meeting with the Programme Officer of the Human Security Department of the United Nations, Mayumi Watabe.

He is on a six day official tour of Kagera and Kigoma regions to assess the progress made in various projects related to safety and security.

During the visit, he will also determine whether the projects reflect the amount of money that has been spent, so as to decide if more funds should be disbursed or not.

Tarimo was glad that within the period under review, many people had become more aware of the need to expose criminal acts and those who own firearms illegally.

”Now they know how to protect themselves against criminals. In fact, the rate of armed criminal acts in the two regions has considerably gone down,” he said.

However, the coordinator said that there is little co-operation from refugees, much as their camps are known as the source of illegal firearms.
