Temporary closure of the border between Tanzania and Zambia yesterday caused inconveniences to travellers between Dar es Salaam, Lusaka and Harare.
The decision to close the border to traffic was reached yesterday by regional authorities from both sides.
Chaos reigned on Wednesday and Thursday this week after the death of a Tanzanian businessman, Lucas Msuya, in the custody of Zambian police.
At a joint meeting between the regional commissioners, John Mwakipesile of Mbeya and his Zambian counterpart, Joel Mistango, it was agreed that despite the closure people were allowed to cross to either side.
Authorities in Zambia formed a probe committee to establish the circumstances leading to the death of the Tanzanian.
However, Mwakipesile issued a last warning to the Zambians, saying Tanzania would no longer take things lightly,if an incident of similar nature occurred again.
Addressing residents of Tunduma, Inspector General of police, IGP Said Mwema appealed for calm and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Part of the meeting deliberations include joint assessment by the Tanzania Revenue Authority and their Zambian counterparts on the loss incurred during the fracas.
A total of 25 cars were damaged in Zambia and 4 were set ablaze on the Tanzanian side.
