By Thobias Mwanakatwe, PST, Tanga

A ten-year comprehensive programme that will cost the government 70bn/- to build military barracks for thousands of armed forces officers now living in civilian residences is in the offing.

Deputy Minister for Defence and National Service Omar Yusuf Mzee made the disclosure on Tuesday during a four-day tour of Tanga Region when he paid a courtesy call to the Regional Administrative Secretary,Paulo Chikira.

He said it was the Ministry of Defence and National Service’s desire to build military barracks countrywide to move officers from civilian residences.

He said a 20bn/- loan would be secured locally, adding that foreign financial institutions had also been approached to provide the remaining balance of 50bn/-.

Mzee said the programme that would be carried out in phases would be completed in 10 years, after which disciplined forces personnel would be expected to discharge services more professionally.

About the perennial transport problem, he said already 624 buses had been purchased and would be distributed to all armed forces countrywide.

He warned members of the forces against taking the law into their own hands. Instead, he said, they should endeavour to co-exist with civilians.

During his tour, Mzee is expected to inspect the services provided in military camps, including the ongoing rehabilitation of military barracks.
