The government has been advised to set one curriculum for all institutions offering journalism and media studies in the country as a way of improving the quality of Tanzania journalists.
The Director of Planning and Finance of the Tanzania School of Journalism, Ernest Sungura made the remarks at a party to welcome fresh students who joined the college on Saturday.
The curriculum will help identify capable students to fill in the journalism profession as there are some graduates who complete their studies but cannot write news correctly, he said.
Sungura said to ensure quality of journalists in the profession, stakeholders in the media should be involved in the setting up of the curriculum instead of involving people who are not at all in the profession.
He said involving such stakeholders is necessary because they have the journalism profession and can set out ways that will be understood easily instead of those which are outside the profession.
The Director said the problems found in some of the journalists are due to being taught theoretically on how to write news instead of being given techniques thereof, as a result they fail to write correctly making it difficult for editors to re-write their stories.
On her part, the Schools Member, Wallace Mauggo advised the government to issue loans to all colleges registered by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) instead of issuing loans to top government institutions as they have students who are capable of perfoming well even though they are in private colleges.
