Journalists’ Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) will today announce the environmental journalist of the year at a short function scheduled to be held in Dar es Salaam.

The top winner of the Minister’s Award of Environmental Journalist of the Year 2006 will go home with 2m/-, a trophy and certificate, JET Chairman, Deogratus Mfugale, said in an official statement issued yesterday.

The second winner in the ceremony to be graced by the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (responsible for environment)Prof Mark Mwandosya, will receive 1m/-.

People expected at the function will include diplomats, local and international media representatives, JET members and others.

The competition involved 33 participants - all of them from newspapers, including JET and non-JET members. ”Tanzanian journalists living abroad also participated in the annual event,” said Mfugale.

”Because of administrative and financial factors, other media professionals - photographers, radio and TV reporters did not participate. But we expect to include them next year,” according to JET chairman.
