By Austin Beyadi

NCCR-Mageuzi Chairman James Mbatia has withdrawn a threat to sue the government over discrimination in the education system, which he had described as being in contravention of the national constitution.

Addressing a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Mbatia said his party had decided to withdraw its intention after the government increased funding for higher education last week.

He said the party also withdrew the threat because the selection of university students would be based on merit.

Instead, the party will convene a national forum next month to discuss the national education policy.

The forum, he said, will be addressed by experts and professionals from different sectors.

He said among the main issues to be discussed include participation of special groups such as orphans, people with disabilities and the poor.

Mbatia was earlier of the opinion that the state had violated Article 9 of 2004 section 6(A) and (B) and section 7(1) (h) of the national Constitution which prohibits discrimination in education.

The NCCR-Mageuzi chairman expressed satisfaction at the way the government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education had handled the sponsorship problem.

”To make sure that all students get loans from the government, the ministry announced a further 47.8bn/- in addition to the moneys approved by the Parliament,” he said.
