The Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) has asked the management of private schools to properly remunerate teachers because of their sterling performance in improving the standards of education in the country.

TASAF Director, Dr Servarious Likwelile made the clarion call yesterday in Dar es Salaam. He said apart from hiking salaries for the teachers, the schools should also be fully equipped with teaching facilities.

Low salary packages and lack of facilities, he said, would frustrate the schools ability to support the government’s ambition to raise the standards of education.

Dr Likwelile was speaking during the Form Four graduation ceremonies at St Mary’s Secondary School, in Dar es Salaam.

’Your role is not only to provide education, but also to care for the well being of those who are working to sustain operations of the schools,’ Dr Likwelile said.

On his part, the Director of St Mary’s, Thadeus Mtembei, said the school spent 12m/- on its budget to motivate the teachers.

He said 17m/- would be spent on procurement of 10 motor bikes to ease transport problems for the teachers.
