By Gerald Kitabu

Tanzania Union of Industrial and Commercial Workers (TUICO) is planning to conduct a comprehensive programme of educating its leaders and members across the country about new labour laws.

The laws that were passed by the National Assembly last year include Employment and Labour Relations Act number 6 of 2004 and Labour Institutions Act number 7 of 2004.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Monday, during the launch of a TUICO tool kit that shows the new laws, Secretary General Boniface Nkakatisi said the Union leaders would be educated first and would be required to transmit the knowledge to its members across the country.

He said prior knowledge was important before the law came into force, for effective and efficient implementation.

”We hope this program will help to resolve various conflicts and forge mutual relations at work places,” said Nkakatisi.

He said it was the obligation of every leader to ensure that they understood the new laws and defend the interests of TUICO members.

He said the new labour laws also follows the ongoing globalisation in terms of socio-economic development which proposes for new and conducive working environment.

The new labour laws replace Employment Ordinance, Security of employment Act, Compensation Act and the Industrial Court.
