Tanzanians living in Zambia safe

By John Lubungo, PST, Lusaka

Tanzanian High Commission in Zambia has said the recent skirmishes at the Tunduma border town did not affect business in either side.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Zambia George Mwanjabala said the incident was minor and normal business at the border point had resumed.

’The skirmishes were only witnessed in Tunduma. Elsewhere, Tanzanians continued to live in peace with their Zambian hosts and went about their business without interruption,’ Mwanjabala said.

He dismissed media reports that Tanzanian-owned businesses in Lusaka had been attacked and burnt.

The envoy said yesterday in an interview with PST that Zambian police had arrested two officers in connection with the death of a Tanzania businessman who died while in custody.

However, Mwanjabala condemned the Zambian police at Nakonde for the murder of Lucas Msuya.

Zambian Commissioner of Police Francis Kabonde said investigations were underway to determine what transpired before Msuya was killed.

’I will transfer most of the policemen at Nakonde Police Station to pave the way for thorough investigations,’ he said.
