Opoition party leaders have deplored the claim on the existence of a truly independent electoral commission in Tanzania that is capable to supervise genuinely democratic elections.
Speaking during the launch of the Tanzania Centre for Democracy Strategic Plan (CDSP) for the year 2007/10 in Dar es Salaam early this week, the Civic United Front (CUF) National Chairman, Prof Ibrahim Lipumba, advised Tanzania to draw lessons from the independent electoral commission of South Africa.
Lipumba said fair representation in the electoral process would allow the electorate to have leaders of their choice.
In order to fulfill free and fair elections in the country, the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) will provide the right suggestions that will lead to the establishment of an independent electoral commission.
He said to ensure political development in the country, state organs, including the Police Force’s should do their job professionally to protect the citizens and not the ruling party.
He said political parties in the country have not been able to grow into strong, capable, and viable institutions that can play an effective role.
The strategic plan calls for the support to all political parties in the country to enhance their capacity in playing their part in strengthening democracy and good governance.
