Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Abbas Kandoro reiterated yesterday that the government would not relent to its plan to evict hawkers in all streets by September 30, this year.
According to him, plans to kick out the seas of petty traders from all central business districts (CBDs) of major towns and cities around the country by the end of this month were intact.
Speaking to The Guardian in an exclusive interview yesterday,Kandoro said he had already discussed the matter with other regional leaders including mayors and district commissioners and delegate some power to them.
We have agreed that District Commissioners and Mayors will organise meetings with petty traders for them to discuss their problems, he said.
He said he could not do everything while there are some leaders who can help him, and added that petty traders should follow the directives given to them by relevant authorities.
There is no one who hates the machingas, the problem is for them to conduct businesses in the areas which are not allowed, he said.
Kandoro said the petty traders were given six months to vacate from those areas which are not allowed for business, adding that the time was quite ample for them to do so.
He insisted that the deadline for the petty traders to vacate the place is September 30 and they should obey the authority.
Responding to the claims by some of the petty traders that Kigogo Sambusa area was not a government property and that the legal owner would later evict them, he said the area belongs to the municipality.
