Songas power generation restored

Elecricity generation at the Songas natural-gas-to-electricity plant is expected to return to full generation capacity today.

This follows the installation of a 40 megawatts emergency generator, UGT6, which arrived in the country on Friday.

Speaking to the press after visiting the plant, Minister for Energy and Minerals, Dr Ibrahim Msabaha said, the installation of the units was on schedule and that by next month, the country would be able to produce extra power.

He said Songas engineers have been working around the clock to ensure that it is back to full operational capacity.

He said,apart from the Songas generators, Aggreko - a private firm based in the United Arab Emirates - had procured transformers and eight generators, which arrived at the plant last week.

He further said a ship carrying 12 Aggreko generators was expected to dock yesterday at the Dar es Salaam Port.

He said that gas pipes had already been installed and would begin supplying gas once the generators are installed.

He also said progress had been made in the procurement of a 100MW capacity generators by an American firm, Richmond Development. The equipment will arrive in the country on October 8. The first phase of the project will provide 22MW.
