JK urged to reduce taxes on wages

President Kikwete has been urged to reduce taxes paid by workers so as to increase their net pay, thereby improve individual and family welfare.

The appeal was made by the eastern zone chairman of the Researchers and Allied Workers Union (RAAWU), Michael Mawondo, when he was addressing a press conference yesterday in Dar es Salaam.

”Salaries are quite low compared to high taxes. This forces workers to spend 30-40 per cent for paying taxes,” he said.

However, Mawondo commended President Kikwete for establishing a commission for reviewing workers salaries. He urged him to make sure that the commission fulfilled its responsibilities.

Evaristi Mwalongo, another RAAWU official, said it was high time the government paid full attention to workers’ plight by ensuring that salaries were able to satisfy the needs of employees.

”Poor wages are the major cause for the country’s brain drain,” he said.
