50,000/- bribe lands man to 7 years in jail

Mashaka Bakari (32), a resident of Ipembe Street here has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment after he was found guilty of attempting to obtain 50,000/- by false pretence.
Before Singida Resident Magistrates court presided by Magistrate Charles Qollo, Bakari was accused of pretending to have a relationship with another magistrate, Ruth Massam.
The accused was charged to have committed the offence at around 10 a.m. on March 20, 2006, at Utemini Street in the Municipality.
Prosecuting, Assistant Inspector John Kungu told the court that on the fateful date, the accused cheated one Omari Alli that he (Bakari) knew acting resident magistrate Ruth Massam, and that he was capable of inducing her to favour Alli, in a criminal case.
Kungu alleged that Alli was asked by the accused to give Bakari 50,000/- to take it to the magistrate.
Kungu further told the court that before the money was released, the police were tipped about the bribe and a trap was laid that saw the accused arrested red handed receiving the money.
The court fined the accused 250,000/- failure, to serve a seven-year jail sentence.
He also ordered after serving his sentence, to compensate Massam with 500,000/-for mudslinging her.
Bakari failed to pay the fine and started serving his seven years jail term from Friday.
