The Kirando B Ward in Nkansi District, Rukwa Region has constructed five staff houses in its four schools.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with this paper, the Kirando B Ward Education Coordinator, Erasmus Msangawale, said the four schools had already completed the building of staff quarters using government funds.
The houses have been built as follows: one house at Katongolo Primary School, two at Kapili Primary School, one house at Mkinga Primary School and one at Masolo Primary School, he said.
He said the government had provided about 3.6mil/- for each house while the community took part in making bricks, collecting sand and water, plus other related activities.
We have tried our best. However, the government funding is inadequate. Many teachers are still in need of decent accommodation, Msangawale said, adding that the problem was common in areas located along Lake Tanganyika.
People are used to seeing teachers renting in the villages and others building their own houses, he said.
He added: This behaviour has made them somehow lazy. They are unwilling to participate in efforts to build more staff quarters, he said.
He said the few staff quarters that existed encouraged teachers to offer education to the pupils. Generally speaking, the shortage of decent accommodation has forced many teachers to move to other areas where they are ensured of decent accommodation, he said.
