Kisutu Resident Magistrates Court yesterday placed a Dar es Salaam businessman under judicial supervision for two years for being a threat to society.

Joseph Matiko, 44, becomes the ninth business mogul to be placed under judicial supervision.

Matiko, a Tegeta-based tycoon is accused of being behind a series of armed robberies that have in the past rocked Dar es Salaam and other regions.

The prosecution led by Raphael Rutaihwa, produced before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate, Pellagia Khaday an affidavit by Dar es Salaam Regional Crime Officer, Godfrey Nzo that claimed Matiko was a threat to society.

Rutaihwa claimed in 2000, Matiko was involved in armed robbery in Tanga region.

He further claimed, in 2002 the accused was allegedly involved in a similar crime at Bagamoyo District, in Coast region.

Based on the information from the RCO, Rutaihwa claimed that more confidential reports indicated that the accused was involved in the alleged crimes.

Khaday said she was satisfied that Matiko needed court supervision as was applied by the Public Prosecutor.

The accused failed to meet the bail conditions and was remanded until November 20, this year when the case comes up for mention.

The court directed Matiko to surrender his passport to the RCO and report to him every last Friday of the week for two months.
