More than 300 Shoprite super market staff in Dar es Salaam may down their tools if their employer does not accept their proposals for a voluntary staff agreement.

This was resolved during a meeting called to discuss proposals they had submitted to the company management.

A workers’ committee member, Thomas Yomo, said that the firm’s administration had ignored their call for improved pay packages.

’’The suggestions forwarded to the management have been rejected. We are going to appeal to the Shoprite headquarters in South Africa,’’ he said.

He said if there was no consensus of the matter, then the workers would decide on news ways of dealing with the issue.

The workers are also demanding more fringe benefits, including leave allowance, condolence money and burial expense disbursement.

The administration has rejected the call for it to meet meal, transport and medical costs.

He said that the company had agreed to grant a 28-day annual leave and a working-hour schedule.

According to Yomo, the minimum wage for Shoprite workers 110,000/-. The employees want the minimum wage to stand at 264,000/-.
