A South Korean electric company has said it will invest in power production to help Tanzania solve its energy crisis.
The Chairman of Korean Electric Production Company, (KEPCO), Han Joon Hoo made the pledge in Seoul yesterday during discussion with President Jakaya Kikwete.
After completion of feasibility studies on the project, Korean experts will prepare a comprehensive report before implementation of the project, Joo Hoo said.
He told President Kikwete that his company had the capacity to undertake such a project adding that power production from natural gas and coal was less expensive compared with hydro-power generation.
Earlier, President Kikwete told the KEPCO chairman that despite massive investment by the government in power production through construction of dams, the country was still facing economic hardships due to load shedding.
Due to prolonged drought, the national power utility, TANESCO, was obliged to shut down turbines in two of the major dams, Kidatu and Mtera that the nation has for many years depended on power generation.
The suspended production has greatly affected the supply to the national power grid, Kikwete said.
He said whether the Korean company opts for a joint venture in the production of power or generate power and sell it to TANESCO, the issue at stake was generation of power that the nation could rely upon.
KEPCO has similar projects in China and Nigeria.
