By Yasmine Protace, PST, Mkuranga

The Mkuranga District Council plans to establish a fund for social health which will enable every household to have free medical care in hospitals and dispensaries located in the district.

The District Medical Officer, Bakari Mhina, told PST on Wednesday that the fund would enable every household joining it to get free medical care in government health centres.

He said in order to join the fund, each household had to contribute 5,000/- annually.

”Parents and their eight children below the age of 18 are members of a household that can benefit from the plan as they will be provided with membership cards,” he said.

Mhina said that members of the fund would benefit by getting free medical care at any medical centre while non members would pay 1,500/- every time they visit the centres.

He said establishment of the fund in Mkuranga district follows a visit made by the District Health Committee to Igunga, in Tabora Region, where the system works effectively following mobilisation of the people towards that end.
