Injured heroes of 1978/79 Kagera war might be compensated after over two decades of waiting, the government indicated yesterday.

”The government has heard the grievances of the victims of the Kagera war. We are looking for ways to assist them…” Prime Minister Edward Lowassa told the house yesterday responding to a supplementary question by Yahya Issa (CCM Chwaka)

He said the government was compiling a report about the soldiers who fell and others who were injured during the war.

Earlier, the deputy minister for Defence and National Services, Omar Yussuf Mzee, had assured the house the government was designing a mechanism to compensate members of the armed forces injured during the war.

”About 804 soldiers were injured,” he said.

After medical check ups, most of them were found unfit to continue serving the army, he said.

”Those unfit were retired and those found capable of serving the army in other ways were employed as civilians,” he said.

Those who were retired were given their dues according to the nature of injuries, he said.

The government also met their treatment costs, he said.
