A lawyer for former Tabora regional commissioner Ukiwaona Ditopile Mzuzuri, who is facing charges over the killing of a commuter bus driver, has called upon the media not to convict Ditopile out of court.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, the Chairman of Law Associated Advocates, Sam Mapande, said that immediately after the occurrence, Ditopile submitted a letter of resignation as a regional commissioner, a request which was duly granted by President Jakaya Kikwete.

Mapande also called upon the Judiciary to judge him just like any other citizen, inspite of his previous status as regional commissioner.

”On November 6, 2006, when Ditopile first appeared in court for the first mention, we asked the court to caution media institutions not to convey false information with regard to the proceedings of the case,” he said.

Mapande said there had been a spate of rumours from the media which were convincing the public that Ditopile committed the crime for which he is currently charged.

”Our country has a good Constitution which protects human rights. The Government has signed different protocols that aim at safeguarding the rights of citizens, including that of a fair trial, ”added Mapande.
