Govt cautiously takes up dual citizenship issue

By Pascal Shao, Dodoma

The Laws Reforms Commission under the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has been directed to collect views from different stakeholders on whether dual citizenship in Tanzania should be allowed or not.

The Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Lawrence Masha responding to a question from a legislator from the Isles, Dr. Ali Tarab Ali, made the revelation yesterday in Parliament.

Masha said the ministry was preparing a cabinet statement on the matter.

”After discussions and consultations the government will make an official report on the issue,” he said.

Masha cautioned that despite the obvious benefits Tanzanians could enjoy if dual citizenship was permitted, it could also have negative impacts to the country on security and economic matters if misused.

Foreigners can take advantage of being Tanzanians to make the country a land of harvesting instead of investing, he said.

According to the constitution, the citizenship Act No. 6 of 1995 forbids dual citizenship, he said adding only children under 18 years under the law could enjoy the privilege.

After they reach 18 years of age they have to denounce citizenship of one country, he clarified.
