By PST Correspondent, Arusha

Police here suspect that a house owned by former Arusha Regional Police Commander, Placid Chaka, is a den for stolen motor vehicles.

Chaka was transferred from Arusha to the Police Headquarters several years ago.

Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei said yesterday that the police raided the home on Wednesday, and found it locked from the outside.

Earlier, armed carjackers had snatched a Land Cruiser with registration No.T813ACY, at Shamsi area in Ngarenaro. Subsequent investigation led to Chaka’s house.

”The thugs fired several shots in the air before driving away the vehicle,” he said.

The matter was reported at a police station. Police detectives, assisted by the owner of the stolen car, received information that it was hidden inside Chaka’s house.

”We did not take the information for granted,” he said, ”since then, the police have been guarding the house, waiting for its occupants to show up,” he said.

Armed policemen are guarding the house to ensure that no vehicle is driven out of the compound, the RPC said, adding that in the meantime, law enforcers are processing a search warrant so that they can break into the house.

”It is true the house belongs to former Arusha RPC Placid Chaka,” he said.

He said the police had found a Toyota Hiace inside the compound.

The owner of the stolen vehicle claimed that some spare parts fixed on the mini-bus had been part of his car, Matei said.

”We are working on the allegations. We will ensure that all procedures are followed so as to ensure that justice is done without prejudice,” said Matei.
