An independent association fighting for children’s rights, Chakuhawa has expressed its concern over increasing moral decay in the Tanzanian society.

The problem poses a great threat to the future generation, said Kelvin Shola, the Co-ordinator of the association during a graduation ceremony organised in Dar es Salaam mid week for 43 pre-primary school teachers from Mbezi, Goba, Ubungo and Kibamba ward.

He blamed parents who abandon their children, saying they are the cause of the upward trend in the decline of morals among teenagers, some who resort to street life.

Shola said a research conducted by CHAKUHAWA recently established that 35 per cent of children in Tanzania brought up by single parents or are living as dependants on grandparents are those abandoned by parents.

The 43 pre-primary school teachers had completed a training session organized by CHAKUHAWA to equip them with skills to improve the standard of pre-primary school education in Tanzania.

Shola said pre-primary school was an important part of the education process and required specialised teachers.

The Education Officer for Mbezi Ward, Amisada Sudi, while presenting certificates to the teachers said she expects their contribution would help to stimulate efforts by the government to improve pre-primary school education.
