Non-Governmental Organisations have been urged to tailor long lasting solutions educational and health needs of children living in difficult circumstances and orphans, instead of donating food and other short-term contributions.
The local government chairman of Nzasa B Street at Charambe Ward in Temeke Municipality, Dar es Salaam, Sudi Muhamed Ungando challenged the NGOs over the weekend.
He made the petition in Dar es Salaam while commending the management of Sower International, for offering Christmas gifts to 40 orphans and children living in difficult circumstances.
There are lots of problems facing these children in this ward and all over the country; including lack of school facilities such as uniforms, fees and transport expenses.
They also need healthcare as most of their guardians are unemployed and do not have enough money for medication, he said.
He noted that by seeking permanent solutions in fields of education and health service these children would be able to prepare themselves for the future as self dependant individuals.
On her part, the Sower International Director, Monica Minja, said that her association has planned a long term strategy, which will help children living in difficult circumstances as well as the orphans to live better lives.
We have just started this association whose registration number is 1,735 this year. On December, 7 we provided 50 wheelchairs worthy 12m/- to Temeke municipality. Today we have granted rice, maize flour, cooking oil, beans and soap with 600,000/-, she said.
She said her association had already told those guardians who care for orphans and children who are in difficult circumstances to form groups so that they could be provided grants to run small business.
We also plan to open a workshop in order to train them on entrepreneurship for those who will form groups and receive our grants, she said.
