The Popes representative to Tanzania, Archbishop Joseph Chennoth, has called on Christians to spearhead peace and spread the serenity of Christmas to the human race.
The Apostolic Nuncio, who represents Pope Benedictine XVI, made the appeal during a Christmas homily which he gave at Kimara Catholic Church in Dar es Salaam last night.
There is a lack of goodness and love in the world but God is tender and loving. Let us pray for peace, especially in Israel, where Jesus was born, he said.
Israel is a Middle Eastern country situated at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. For decades, the country has been embroiled in conflict and war.
He added; As we look at Baby Jesus in the manger, we see that he is the answer to todays problems. Instead of violence, in the baby Jesus lying in the manger we see gentleness.
Instead of hatred, we see tenderness. Instead of selfishness, in baby Jesus we see his love for us. Let us ask baby Jesus to help us to become gentle, tender and loving to those living around us.
At national level, Christmas prayers were held at Azania Front Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dar es Salaam, where Bishop Alex Malasusa lashed at selfish leaders who enriched themselves at the expense of others.
Bishop Malasusa urged members of the public to cooperate in the fight against illicit drugs, which are destroying the lives of many young people to the point that they cannot even pray to the Almighty.
People are so selfish. They enrich themselves without considering others. Some individuals own ten houses each. I do not know how a person can live in all those houses, asked the bishop.
Christmas is celebrated every December 25th to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, son of Virgin Mary, who founded Christianity over 2,000 years ago.
