UNFPA donates 1.8bn/- for Z’bar dev projects

United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has donated 1.8bn/- to the Zanzibar government for the implementation of diverse social development programmes in the isles.

The agreement was signed in Zanzibar by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Khamis Mussa and UNFPA Representative, Christopher Mwaijonga.

The donation would benefit the ministry of labour, women development and children, Zanzibar Aids Commission, Zanzibar Poverty Reduction and Economic Growth Programme (MKUZA) and the ministry of health and social welfare.

Mussa said the donation would enable development of different projects apart from raising the welfare of the people of Zanzibar.

He said the project would also help in the implementation of poverty reduction and economic growth programme that the Zanzibar government has initiated with the aim of improving the welfare of Zanzibaris.

UNFPA representative Christopher Mwaijonga said the donation is intended for development activities in the isles.

’’This donation is for government institutions especially those dealing with similar activities with UNFPA,’’ he said.

President Amani Karume’s government has taken different initiatives in the fight against poverty including improving fishing and agricultural sectors.
