HakiElimu has withdrawn two TV and radio spots regarding teachers salaries and housing, following recent government efforts to establish a practical mechanism to ensure that teachers and other frontline civil servants receive their pay reliably and on time.
According to a statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday and signed by Hakielimu Executive Director Rakesh Rajan, the decision was an encouraging step towards teachers wellbeing.
He said it demonstrated what a responsive government could do to find innovative solutions to the problems.
The government deserves praise for its action. Following this development, we have instructed TV and radio stations to stop airing its spot regarding teachers salaries and housing, he said.
He said that such action demonstrated that the government had listened to teachers and advocates and devised innovative means to respond to the challenge.
It also concretizes the commitment made by President Jakaya Kikwete during World Teachers Day held on October this year to expedite payment to teachers, Rajan said.
He said that among measures recently announced by the Minister of Finance, included an agreement with the National Microfinance (NMB) to deposit salaries on the 23rd day of each month, regardless of delays to disburse on the government side and the creation of payment centers closer to the teachers where the bank is far away.
