Tanzania has been asked to denounce Morocco`s occupation of part of the Saharawi Republic in West Sahara; and the alleged subsequent human rights violations.

The county`s envoy in Dar es Salaam, Mahayub Buyemba, made a passionate appeal to Tanzania and the international community “to recognize the failure of Morocco to respect Saharawi as an independent state.”

The 61st session of the UN General Assembly had a resolution which reaffirmed the West Sahara country as an independent state, he said.

“In our country women, children and elderly people are tortured and imprisoned by Morrocan police,” Buyemba said.

He said the Morocco government has for years been suppressing Saharawi.

The two nations, he said, had agreed in 1991 to carry out a referendum to decide on the future of the two states.

“Morocco has refused to honour the accord. We are in a deadlock,” he said.
