By Juma Thomas, Dodoma

Being part of the Union, Zanzibar is not compelled to pay membership fee in the East African Community, the House was told yesterday.

Deputy Minister for East Africa Cooperation, Dr Diodorous Kamala said that East African Treaty recognizes Zanzibar as part of Tanzania. Thus Zanzibar is not compelled to pay membership fee.

Dr Kamala was responding to a question from Ussi Ame Pandu (Mtoni) who had wanted to know how much Zanzibar was paying as membership fee in the East African Community.

Pandu also wanted to know how much each member country pays as a membership fee.

Dr Kamala said that membership fee in the East African Community for Tanzania was paid through the budget of the ministry of East African Cooperation.

He said the fee paid includes Zanzibar as well because it is part of the Union.

Dr Kamala said membership fee for the East African member countries vary from year to year.

That is, depending on the size the budget of the community in the respective year.

The minister said for instance that in 2006/2007 each member country was required to pay US dollars 4,054,973 in the community budget.

He said estimates of the EAC expenditures are determined by the requirement of the respective year.
