Owners of government and private schools have been urged to change their day schools into boarding to pave the way for improved education in the country.

In a press conference in Dar es Salaam last Friday, members of staff and students` representatives of Loyola High School based in Dar es Salaam said it is high time school owners in the country embarked on a programme to shift from day schools to boarding to enhance quality education.

The press conference was organized to inform the public about a planned fund raising event towards construction of a hostel for girls.

``The school has organised a fundraising dinner to collect money for building dormitories to reduce the daily transport hassle for students in order to improve their performance``, said Jerome Manyahi, the school`s head master.

Students who talked to the press attributed their poor performance in class to transport problems and lack of a conducive environment for studying at homes.

A Form Six student, Amina Sanga said: ``We waste a lot of time travelling to school daily due to congestion in public transport.``

She attributed girl`s poor performance at school to engagement in housekeeping chores once at home instead of studying and the ruthless language by daladala touts as a psychological torture.

``Had we been in boarding school, we could have spent that time for studying and discussion. While at boarding schools students learn how to budget time and money,`` she added.
