Research stakeholders will meet today in a workshop to take stock of the demands from the society and the opportunities for research activities in the country.

The workshop, organized by the Swedish embassy in Dar es Salaam, will be officially opened by Vice-President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein.

The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) said in a statement released in Dar es Salaam on Monday that the workshop will discuss how research in Tanzania could be further strengthened, and take stock of needs and opportunities of the society in the country.

SIDA Director of the Department for Research Cooperation Berit Olsson said in the statement that emphasis on research was in line with requirements of the National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction, MKUKUTA.

Olsson called on research institutions in the country to boost research activities towards implementing MKUKUTA in a bid to strengthen key service sectors.

The sectors, Olsson said, had potential to increase competence and competitiveness of the country.

``Research, science and technology pervade the provision of health care, physical infrastructure, safe drinking water and access to affordable energy,`` stated Olsson.

But Olsson noted that all this depended on the ability of Tanzanian research institutions to embark on the search for new knowledge and its subsequent dissemination to members of the society.
