The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Hilda Gondwe, has called for increased efforts in enrolling more people in care and treatment programmes.

Gondwe made the remarks on Wednesday when opening a workshop on Formulation of a Health Sector HIV/Aids Strategy in Dar es Salaam.

The workshop aims at consolidating the establishment of services by accelerating their rollout to make them universally accessible to people in need in the period between 2008 and 2012.

``The aim of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for consultants to interact with experts with a view to reaching a consensus on key achievements, challenges and the way forward, as well as setting targets for the new strategy,`` added Hilda.

According to her, the workshop is also to review implementation of health sector HIV/Aids strategies that were formulated in 2002 and which served as the framework that defined and guided the contribution of the health sector in national multisectoral response to HIV and Aids.

``One of the most remarkable achievements in this sector is the enrolment of 153,659 people living with HIV/Aids in the national care and treatment programme, of which 75,647 people, including 7,775 children, are already on anti retroviral drugs,`` she added.

She said after the first strategy failed to reach set targets for various reasons, the current one is to be supported by a number of partners including the US government, Swiss Development Corporation, the World Bank under the Tanzania Multisectoral Project, the World Health Organisation and the government of Tanzania.

The workshop attracted local and foreign health experts and partners.
