The Ministry of Water yesterday disclosed that the country was facing an acute shortage of water technicians, with statistics showing current shortage at 700 technicians.
The Deputy Minister for water, Shamsa Mwangunga said at the 29th graduation ceremony of the Rwegarulila Water Resources Institute in Dar es Salaam on Saturday that the number of water technicians required in the country`s labour market is larger than that of water technicians graduating each year.
Mwangunga said the water institute has been producing only 48 water expert graduates every year which is a relatively small number of graduates for the gap.
She said that if the institute continues to produce the same number of graduates per year, the institute will take 15 years to fill the gap.
The deputy minister called upon parents to help their female youths study at the water institute as there are more rooms for female technicians.
Commenting on the water problem in Dar es Salaam Mwangunga said that the government is easing the water problems in the city by ensuring water is accessible in every corner of the city.
She said that there are currently water kiosks built in the city to allow easy access to water by the people in major cities and their suburbs; and that supply pipes will soon be installed in Dar es Salaam to allow people get connections from the main pipes.
