Kinondoni Municipal Mayor Salum Londa has said that his council does not have enough resources and capacity that can facilitate provision of social services and empower its people to fight against abject poverty.

Londa said this in Dar es Salaam mid last week when presenting the municipality’s budget for the 2007/2008 fiscal year at a full council meeting.

He said poor participation in development projects, specifically construction of secondary schools, was one of the problems facing the municipality, saying the expected number of students this year stood at 12,784 and needed 320 classrooms.

`The society needs to contribute as much as they can in order to attain the year 2008 goal,` he said.

He said the municipality had set aside 48.7 per cent of the budget to improve the district`s economy, naming the target areas as collection of internal revenue, rehabilitation of Karume, Kaole and Katoke roads and constructions of other 5-kilometer roads.

`The move will help to reduce transport problems and congestion on Morogoro Road,` he insisted.

Londa further said the municipality had set aside 353m/- for social services and welfare improvement.

He cited developing water service to digging wells and finishing national rural water supply and sanitation programme as some of the targeted services.

The Mayor mentioned the plan to build eight community schools in wards without secondary schools.

He also talked about a plan to build dormitories for schools on the outskirts of the city, citing Kingo’ngo, Mpigi, Magohe, Mbweni, Goba, Mpakani and Temboni, saying the schools were far from the municipal centre.

Londa also said: `We plan to convert Sinza dispensary into a municipal hospital. This will help to provide services for people living in the vicinity. We also plan to build another hospital at Goba and to initiate two other projects in the 2008/2009 budget`.

He called on the society to participate effectively in bringing about development and reduce poverty in the municipality.
