Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) yesterday defended the Kigoma North legislator, Zitto Kabwe, saying there was nothing for him to apologise.
The opposition party, CHADEMA, disagreed that the alleged utterances by the legislator were incorrect, as claimed on Monday by the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Daniel Nsazuganko.
Nsanzugwanko called a press conference on Monday to demand an apology from the young Chadema parliamentarian, who is reportedly alleged to have accused President Jakaya Kikwete of telling Mahembe villagers they will not get water because they elected a legislator from Chadema.`
In a three-page statement issued yesterday in Dar es Salaam and signed by party`s information and publicity director Erasto Tumbo, the party said the Member of Parliament would not apologise because there was no reason for him to do so.
`We would like to let the public know that we don’t see why Kabwe Zitto should apologise. We insist that our legislator will not apologise, and instead it`s the President who should apologise for using tax-payers` money to campaign for CCM,` reads the statement, in part.
According to the statement, what Kabwe said at a press conference on May 27, this year was valid and was a swift and genuine response to President Kikwete`s statements when he visited and addressed rallies in the Chadema stronghold.
Chadema argued in the statement that Kikwete used his recent tour of Kigoma Region to campaign for the ruling party and imply to the people that they made a mistake to elect an opposition MP.
`It`s very surprising to see today the year 2007 that the President is still questioning the wisdom of the people of Kigoma to vote for the opposition,` said the statement.
The statement further went on to say that Chadema was fed up with the President`s jumbling tendency of state and ruling party affairs during his official visits.
Chadema claims that Kikwete was ill advised regarding the concept of development because it was the taxpayers` money, which brings development in the country, regardless of their political backgrounds or affiliations.
