The National Environment Management Council (NEMC), in collaboration with the World Wide Fund (WWF) and other coastal environmental managements, has urged the society to keep their surroundings clean for the benefit of marine organisms.

The call was made last week by the WWF Communication officer, Eastern Africa Marine Eco-region, Godlove Mwamsojo, during a four-day forum in Dar es Salaam as part of celebrations to mark the World Environment Week.

During the celebrations members and officials of the NGOs collected plastic materials and bottles along the beaches in order to save the lives of fish and other animals.

He said the regular cleaning of beaches was an important way of restoring their natural beauties.

This, he said, reduced the risk to both human, marine creatures and habitats from harmful pollutants.

This first ever Tanzania Coastal and Marine forum is attended by stakeholders from research and training institutions, people from the private sector, civil society and community-based organisations from the country's coastal areas.

Mwamsojo said the forum would provide the opportunity for discussing problems and issues related to coastal and marine management for the purpose of formulating recommendations on relevant management actions that can influence national policies and strategies.

The theme of the forum is `sharing knowledge and experience for sustainable growth and poverty alleviation`.

He urged the public to be aware of the importance of marine and coastal environment to the wellbeing of coastal communities and the national economy as well as on issues related to sustainable resources utilization.
