By Lusekelo Philemon, Dodoma

The government has insisted that it will never work on media reports over allegations leveled against former President Benjamin Mkapa on his involvement in private business while working at the State House.

The government position was stated yesterday by the Minister of State in the President`s Office (Good Governance), Philip Marmo, when debating budget estimates of the Public Service Management.

Responding to requests of the opposition that the government comments on the scandal, Marmo said the government would never work on newspapers reports.

`We will not work on newspapers reports. If there is any one who wants to find the truth of the matter, the procedures are there. The stand of the government is that we will not at any time get involved in such kind of debate. The existing rules and regulations are adequate,` he said.

`The law provides proper channels for any one who is not satisfied with the trend of any leader in this country. Anyone can use those channels by paying only 1,000/- to the ethics tribunal.` Marmo said.

He further explained that the government had circulated about 6, 415 forms to be filled by top government officials to show the property they owned and where and how they got it.

Marmo said there were about 3, 317 government officials who had returned their filled in forms.
