President Guebuza calls for strengthened partnership

Tanzania and Mozambique have been urged to strengthen their partnership by exploring opportunities for more investments.

President of Mozambique Armando Guebuza said that building a global business partnership was a challenge to both the governments and more importantly to business men and women.

Guebuza made the remarks yesterday during the opening ceremony at the 31st Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair in Dar es Salaam that drew exhibitors from various parts of the world.

He said that trade fairs were beehives of business activities and contacts, creating conditions for the networks to be established, renewed or strengthened.

`By and large business men and women assess the results of their participation not by the number of business cards exchanged but by the networks necessary to the success in future contacts,` he said.

He said that the awards to the investors were more than an encouragement for each other and an additional responsibility to do better for the economy of Tanzania.

`Managing success is not an easy undertaking as everyone else looks up for references and guidance,` he noted.

He said: `The investors may not be attracted by the awards this time round but should realise that they are also making substantial contribution to the socio economic development of the country.`

Guebuza reminded that during the bilateral talks on Tuesday both Mozambique and Tanzania reiterated their commitment to elevating their economic ties, which were launched and have been growing since the former country’s independence in 1975.

A number of steps had been taken recently and chief among them was the visa exemption regime, already in force between the two countries and the launch of the construction of the unity bridge on the Ruvuma River, he said.

`Mtwara Corridor is also an important example of how the governments of Mozambique and Tanzania have been working together with other neighbouring countries collectively to create conditions for boosting political, cultural and economic cooperation among them for the benefit of the people,` he said.

Earlier, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Basil Mramba expressed his disappointment over the US and EU for their continued subsidization of agriculture in their countries.

He said that the act had made it difficult for developing countries to compete with the developed countries and called for the removal of subsidies in the sector.

`Tanzania and Mozambique are still in the Least Developed Countries category though our economies are growing, more investment is needed to render us African tigers,` he said.

Mramba said Tanzania and Mozambique needed to improve trade by putting in place reliable infrastructures between them.
