Shortage of working equipment in the Prisons is one of the reasons for low morale in performance of its staff.
The remark was said here by one of the retired Prisons officers, Constantine Mwita, at a farewell function for four ex-officials held at the Shinyanga Prisons Officer`s Mess on Wednesday.
The retired officer said lack of rain coats, pullovers, uniforms and good quality residential quarters for ordinary prisons officers demoralized the working spirit of the force causing them to leave for other employment.
Mwita who was the Senior Superintendent of Prisons and chief of staff in Shinyanga Region, called upon all security forces in the country to maintain discipline towards their leaders and society to secure a respected landing in civilian life.
``Senior officers are the main sources of manpower in our forces; they ought to be provided with the necessary tools for effective implementation of their work.
They have also to maintain discipline to win respect of the general society once they retire,`` he said.
He also advised regional senior officials here to stop the habit of writing negative reports for junior officers when they misbehave but should seek audience with them and advise them on the proper ways of behaving.
Bad reports demoralize them such that they ultimately hate their jobs.
Earlier, the Maswa District Commissioner (rtd) James Yamungu, who was officiating at the farewell function, called upon the retirees to be good ambassadors of the force in society.
He advised them to maintain the good image they had in the force when they retire into civilian life in order to attract young men towards joining the Prisons force.
``Your retirement is a reflection of your good performance in the force and the nation otherwise you would have been sacked long ago.
I wish you long and happy lives, and expect you to be good ambassadors of your former employer,`` said Yamungu.
Retired officers from the Prisons force in Shinyanga Region include the former chief of staff and Senior Superintendent of Prisons, Constantine Mwita; former chief of Kahama District Prison, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Benedict Mahube, Sergents Philip Saimon and Musa Masishanga.
