By Gideon Kivanda, SAUT

The Faculty of Law of the University of Dar es Salaam is to write a biography of outgoing Chief Justice Barnabas Samatta.

Speaking at a farewell party organised by the faculty, its dean, Prof. Sifuni Mchome, said they had reached the decision after realising the important role played by the outgoing chief justice in defending the rule of law in the country.``

Prof. Mchome said the biography, to be titled ‘The Treaties of Justice Samatta’, would tell in detail about what he had done during his tenure as it was the right of the public to know about his contribution to the judicial sector in the country.

He said: ``Samatta was supportive to the faculty as well as to the judicial sector within and outside the country and his contribution to the sector will not be forgotten``.

He said during Samatta`s seven-year stint as chief justice of Tanzania a lot had been improved in the sector such as a substantial increase in the number of judges in the country.

Samatta said the coordination between the faculty and the judicial sector in the country had existed for decades, adding that he appreciated its contribution.

The occasion was also attended by the university`s vice-chancellor, Professor Rwekaza Mukandala and members of the academic staff.
