Retired senior army officers in the country have been advised to shun engaging in criminal activities.

Chief of Defence Forces General George Waitara made the call over the weekend at a party to bid farewell to nine officers who had retired from army service at Twalipo camp in Dar es Salaam.

Waitara told the retirees to establish good relationship with their neighbours and abide by the country’s laws.

`You should continue to advice officers in the force whenever they are in need. You should also be ready to assist people whose rights have been violated,` said Waitara.

For his part, Tanzania People`s Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Davis Mwamunyange underscored the need for retired soldiers to lead crime-free lives.

`It is very disappointing to see army officers involved in criminal activities such as banditry. You should utilise your military experience in saving and not harming the society,` he said.

`Conflicts are anathema in any society as they tend to lead to hostility, violence and war,` Mwamunyange warned.

Mwamunyange urged the retirees to maintain peace and harmony in their areas of domicile.

`Be peace makers where there is conflict,` he said.

`I call upon you to utilise your retirement benefits to establish businesses that will enable you to lead a decent living,` Mwamunyange said.
