Parking in Dar at owner`s risk

Motorists parking vehicles in metropolitan Dar es Salaam will be haunted by insecurity of their vehicles as the NPS parking company says it is not responsible for any loss or damage to the cars.

`Even our receipts for payments indicate clearly that one has to park at owner`s risk and they only pay for the parking space.

They do not park for the security of their cars,` a senior official of the parking company told The Guardian on Sunday on condition of anonymity.

Recently the national chief of traffic police, James Kombe, had suggested that NPS should be held legally responsible for the safety of parked vehicles under its control.

`Our staff attendants have to monitor every car that checks in and out of the parking bays. They have little attention for the security of each car.

Many motorists are insincere and they take the slightest excuse not to pay parking charges. It is difficult to spare time for the security of the cars,` stressed the official.

Kombe had advised: `These people (parking operators) need to be equipped with skills and fire fighting gear just in case of a fire. After all the spaces they claim to be parking lots are officially road reserves and not the property of the NPS.`

Kombe had urged car owners to launch claims to the parking operators should their cars be damaged or broken into by thieves, saying the legal basis for that is clear.
