Mlingwa: Tanzania maintains third position despite disasters

By Pascal Shao, Dodoma

Despite drought and diseases that attacked livestock, Tanzania still maintains the third place in the number of livestock in Africa, after Ethiopia and Sudan.

Deputy Minister for Livestock Development, Charles Mlingwa told the House yesterday in Dodoma when he answered a supplementary question by Kaika Telele (Ngorongoro, CCM).

Telele had wanted to know whether Tanzania is still the third as far as the number of livestock in Africa is concerned, despite the drought and diseases that have attacked the sector.

“I want to assure that despite all the problems facing the livestock sector, Tanzania still maintains the third place in Africa in the bigger number of livestock,” he said.

When responding to a question by Michael Laiser (Longido, CCM), Mlingwa said that a total of 9bn/ is needed for conducting livestock counting to get reliable statistics for the country.

He said that the amount is bigger for the government but the ministry in collaboration with that of Agriculture, Food Safety and Cooperatives, the Prime Minister’s Office and that of Regional Administration and Local Government will continue to collect, analyse and distribute statistics.

Mlingwa said that this would be done using the agriculture and livestock samples of 2002/03 until when adequate funds would be available for a nationwide census.

He said the government did a total livestock counting in 1984 and added that his ministry has put the census in the strategic plan for 2007/08 to 2009/10 and efforts to seek for funds are continuing.
