Six people admitted to Maweni hospital after eating poisoned food

Six people from the same family have been admitted to Maweni Regional Hospital in Kigoma Region after eating a suspected poisoned food.

The Kigoma Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Patrick Byatao, told The Guardian from Kigoma yesterday that the incident occurred at Ujiji-Buzebazeba in Kigoma Municipality on Monday.

`After eating the food, all six persons started to lose body control and became unconscious as well as vomiting, `ACP Byatao stated.

Byatao named the victims as Ally Petro a father of the family, Abu Ally, a Standard Four pupil and Mwajuma Ally, a Standard Three pupil, who cooked the food believed to have been poisoned.

Other victims were named by ACP Byatao as Ramadhani Ally (9), a Standard Two pupil of Buzebazeba Primary School, Fatuma Ally (5) and Hadija Ally (2).

Byatao said all the six victims were admitted to Maweni Regional Hospital.

`We have already sent the sample of the food to the office of the Chief Government`s Chemist in Dar es Salaam for laboratory test,` ACP Byatao said.

So far, no person has been arrested in connection with the suspected poisoned food, according to Byatao.

In the meantime, a man identified as Enock Nzigo has died after taking a larger amount of illicit brew without taking food.

Byatao said the man, a primary school teacher, died on Tuesday after drinking the brew from a local pub.

In another incident, police have arrested a Kasulu resident Upepo Hiyuya (75), for allegedly possessing 50 seedlings of bhangi.

Byatao said that Hiyuya was arrested by on Tuesday, around 11:30 hours.
