Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has hailed Mwanga District leaders and members of the public who volunteered in extinguishing a raging fire that had engulfed a locomotive engine after an accident at Reli-juu area in the district on Tuesday.

TRC director general Linford Mboma made the remarks during a telephone interview with PST over the weekend from Dar es Salaam.

Mboma said the selfless spirit shown by Mwanga District leaders and residents had helped TRC save millions of shillings by saving the locomotive from total destruction.

He said unlike in other areas where vandalism would have followed the accident, Mwanga residents portrayed an attitude of honesty which ought to be emulated by others countrywide.

He thanked Mwanga District police commander and district commissioner Jordan Rugimbana in particular for forging close cooperation with wananchi in ensuring the safety of all goods which were in the derailed wagons.

Scooping sand with their bare hands, Mwanga residents managed to put off the fire.

The locomotive engine was pulling four wagons loaded with cement from Tanga and an assortment of merchandise destined for Moshi.

Three people including the locomotive driver escaped without any injuries.
