Tanzanian herbal and science doctors may study at a Yoga Guru University in India namely Patanjali.

This was said over the weekend during an exclusive interview with the visiting Yoga Guru Master, Swamiji Ramdevi Maharaj.

According to Maharaj, the majority of herbal and science doctors lack knowledge on treating people with chemical-free medications.

He said most chemicals were harmful to human health, thus there was a need to find alternative treatment.

`About 99 percent of doctors in India believe in yoga being the best treatment to various diseases such as asthma, arthritis, stomach, diabetes, cancer, bronchitis, hypertension and other stress-related ailments.

The yoga master added that more than 70 percent of all people in the world had no access to science medication.

He said: `Unlike scientific treatments which use medications, Yoga Guru concentrates on teaching people how to balance their body systems to make them work properly through breathing exercises and meditation.`

`External harmonies can be produced by us. A person becomes ill when their body systems are not well balanced.

Yoga is the balancing of body systems`, he said adding that yoga and pranayam (breathing exercises) kept the body, mind and soul free from disease.

He said that Yoga Guru Philosophy had no connection with religious beliefs.

“People should not be worried about exercising yoga as it cannot stop them from practicing their faiths, “he said.

Asked by The Guardian to comment on claims made by the yoga guru, a Dar es Salaam dentist, Dr. K. S. Gupta, said yoga techniques could subtantially reduce the impact of some diseases.

However, he warned that people should avoid mixing impericial form of medicine with yoga.

`Breathing techniques as applied in yoga can reduce daily stresses of life and lessen the impact of diseases, although I cannot specify the percentage of its effectiveness,` he said.

`Applicants of yoga exercise should not mix it with any imperical form of medication. But if one decides to combine the two, then it should be done under the watchful eye of competent experts or consultants,` he added.

Another medical practitioner, Dr. Widmel Pendael of KNCU dispensary in Moshi, said yoga, widely practised by Japanese, could be recommended as an effective tool in reducing stress and other health related problems.

`Hypertension, blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases may be prevented by yoga. I personally recommend yoga techniques. It is something that works in the course of treating diseases and preventing health complications,` said Dr Pendael.

While in the country, Master Swamiji Ramdevi Maharaj graced a special event at Shree Laxminarayan Temple along Kisutu Street in Dar es Salaam under the Chief Priest, Harish Bhai Shastri.

A statement issued by Dinesh Vaishnav, the Secretary General of Shree Sanatan Dharma Sabha organizers of the tour, said Maharaj would early this week launch the Tanzania Chapter of Patanjali Yog Peeth, a yoga and herbal medicine research establishment based in Haridwar, India.

Vaishnav claimed that over 15 million people had benefited from yoga science training conducted in India and abroad.

Maharaj is said to have exercised yoga from the age of nine and from there became a revered master of yoga guru.

Sumaria Group Chairman Ghulab Bhai Shah and National Yog Advisor Jayaram Thakkar were some of the people who met the Yoga master at the Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Maharaj is accompanied by his International Yoga Coordinator, Colon Dhir.
